Mewtwo

In August 2025 an offer on eBay UK brought this Mewtwo home. It was the first slab purchase that felt like a real decision, beyond my comfort zone, and I questioned whether I was ready. What kept bringing me back was the illustration.

Kimiya Masago gives Mewtwo an extraordinary presence. Outstretched arms and tense fingers suggest an imminent release of energy, yet its expression feels deliberate and controlled. Its pale figure emerges from the dark holographic field, its tail holding the composition together. To me, it captures Mewtwo’s defining contradiction: immense physical power governed by an equally formidable mind.

Purple framing and asymmetric yellow borders place it at the dawn of the e-Card era. This 2001 Japanese release, associated internationally with Expedition, explored a new visual language alongside the Game Boy Advance e-Reader. The design was part of what I wanted to own.

Sometimes you have to accept uncertainty and back your judgement, and buy something you would still be proud to own no matter what happens next.

That is LLL Collection to me: a personal gallery of card art, shaped by curiosity, study and the occasional calculated risk, and by wanting to stop and look at what you’ve collected. This Mewtwo still gives me that feeling. It’s not for sale. Maybe we’ll talk again in ten years.
