A playful wink. A concentrated gaze. Two portraits, one shared origin.

Mew’s rounded silhouette and delicate pink shading soften the geometric rainbow behind it. Beside it, Mewtwo reaches forward, holding stones suspended in the air. The holographic surfaces change with the light; their contrasting expressions remain.

Their relationship is written into Pokémon’s mythology: Mewtwo was created from Mew’s genetic material. Presented together, these illustrations become a dialogue between nature and invention, curiosity and control.

Released in Japan in 1997, both cards belong to Part 4 of Bandai’s Pocket Monsters Carddass series. Small vending machines dispensed them one at a time, an everyday encounter with images that collectors would preserve for decades.

Their image-led compositions invite comparison with the later full-art aesthetic, but they belong to a separate collectible series from the Pokémon TCG. The attribution of these illustrations remains unconfirmed.
